Jenta,
a location found in the central city of Jos. A community that has been
sidelined on many grounds. There are mostly two kinds of response one receives
from people when the community is mentioned, either the respondent does not
know Jenta at all or the respondent know Jenta to be a very bad place. It has
come to be synonymous to thuggery, crime, smoking, gangsterism, etc.
Many
factors have contributed to this bad image, however, that is not our concern.
There comes a time when a community decides to take charge of its destiny, a
time when every patriotic citizen is called to champion a movement that
eventually becomes a revolution. At such times, the issue of pointing fingers
and calling for blames does not help to advance such causes.
We
cannot shy away from the fact that our community is in need of electricity,
water, road, and security but we believe that our most important need is
EDUCATION. With good education, all these other needs can be met with easily.
An educated society produces good leadership, which in turns produces most if
not all of the above mentioned issues.
Education
transform a community. We believe that it will transform ours. Educating the
citizens is the collective responsibility of every educated person. In line
with our many plans of working towards the betterment of our society, the idea
of a library became more important than any other plan. Schools should be
serving the function we are intending to execute but due to the complexities
and lack of support, many of such ideas have fallen to the ground. More so, a
school library will be limited to the student of the school only. Limiting the
scope of the library to the student will only be a continuation of the current
quagmire that is restricting our development, advancement and transformation.
Therefore,
our plan is to reach the entire community; the old, the young and the children.
We do not intend to have any leg left behind.
The
library, we intend, would contain varieties of books including primary school
text books, secondary school text books, engineering books, medical books,
hand-work books, fictional books, motivational books, art books, historical
books, agricultural books, inspirational books, religious books, short stories,
. Considering the size and caliber of our intended target, this will serve for
the start of the project. As time goes on, our range of materials will surely
increase.
The
location for the library will for the meantime will be located at No. 107,
Jenta Mangoro, until a permanent building is erected.
Library
users will be registered, and an agreement signed by the registered users.
Borrowing of books will be manual. Only registered members will be allowed to
borrow books. Registration will be absolutely free.
The
span of time for borrowed books is no much long than 2 weeks.
The
challenge for such a project is always enormous. For the time being, we have
limited it to just one-Getting the books. Creating an awareness that leads to
donation for such a project is demanding, but that is the only path we can
take. We are incapacitated to achieve this entire project on our own. However,
we have tried hard not to request for much. Our request is for donation of
books.
Books
are all we ask for. The best support we can receive is the donation of
materials that would lead to the ultimate build of this library, a library we
intend would become a theatre of dreams, a resource centre for researchers, a
nurturing center for great men and women, and also as a start of many plans
that would eventually transform Jenta."
Also
we are in need of library essentials, such as tables, shelves, cabins, chairs,
etc.
